Second class stamps

Second class stamps were introduced to the UK in 1968 when the old system of letters and printed papers was replaced with two delivery classes. Used for less urgent mail, you can expect the lower cost second class delivery in two to three working days (including Saturdays).

There is a cap on the price of a second class stamp which rises in line with the Consumer Price Index on April 1st each year. The purpose of the cap is to ensure a basicaffordable, universal postal service is available to all, especially vulnerable, consumers and that users of postal services are protected to an extent from ongoing price increases.

This standard stamp price is for a letter – which is defined as 100g or less, 24cm long, 16.5cm wide and 0.5cm deep. Greetings cards, letters and postcards all usually fit into this bracket. For larger or heavier items other pricing applies, e.g. a large letter up to 100g is £1.05, up to 250g is £1.65, up to 500g is £2.15 and up to 750g is £2.70. You can send parcels by this method up to 20kg.

VAT

The price of a second class stamp does not include VAT – they are exempt.

Insurance

All 2nd Class post includes insurance for loss or damage up to £20 or the value of the item – whichever is lower.
